Welcome to the website for the South Jersey Youth Outdoor Day.  This totally FREE event is held annually on the third Saturday in August.  Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for beginners to learn about and try out various outdoor sports without having to buy any of the equipment or supplies.  No selling or solicitation is done at this event (except for organizations recruiting new members).  The event is based in Salem County, but is open to kids from all of South Jersey.  We encourage kids who have attended in previous years to allow other kids who have never been to this event to participate in it.

Our next event will be held (tentatively) on Saturday, AUGUST 17, 2024 (always the 3rd Saturday in August) at the Salem County Sportsmen's Club in Carney's Point.  The times of the event are 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, with registrant check-in beginning at 8:00 am.  This event is open to all kids ages 7 through 17.  All kids must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who will be responsible for their supervision.  Participation is limited to the first 200 kids registered.  You must register in advance.

ACTIVITIES
Every year the planned activities include: non-competitive fishing from the lake shoreline, firearm target shooting (with safety instruction), archery target shooting
(with safety instruction), fly tying, fly fishing casting instruction, canoeing & kayaking, bass boat display, booths hosted by various outdoor organizations and other outdoor displays & activities.  Please note that some kids may be too small to participate in some activities.  The final decision on that will be made by the instructor at the range safety session (at the start of the event) or by the trained instructors at the individual activities.  We also provide a free lunch of hot dogs and beverages.

REGISTRATION & CHECKING IN
Registering for the event:
When the registration period begins on July 1, you register for this event by sending an email to the registration coordinator with some information about the youth(s) (name, age, etc.)
.  Click on the "Click Here to Register" link in the upper left for more details.

Note that participation is limited to the first 200 kids registered.   You must register in advance, so that we can properly estimate the amount of food and supplies required.

Morning of the event:
The main event area will be fenced off in the morning, just beyond the clubhouse.  Participants are not permitted in the fenced-in area until the official 8:30 am start time.

In the morning, the registration check-in table  will be located at the clubhouse
and the range safety sessions will be conducted inside the clubhouse.  After parking, you should proceed to the registration check-in table.  At the registration table you'll sign the printed copy of your registration form.

Also at the registration check-in table, each participant will receive an event activity card with a lanyard.  This card is to be worn from the participant's neck.  In addition, each participant will receive a set of hearing protection (ear plugs) -- these are to be used throughout the day for all firearm activities.

After checking in, you should proceed into the clubhouse to the range safety session area.  After completing the range safety session, each participant's card will be marked indicating completion.  Participants may then proceed to the event entrance at the fenced in area which opens at 8:30 am.   (The official opening of the event may be commemorated with one or two cannon shots!)

During the day, after the completion of certain activities (shooting sports, archery, canoeing/kayaking), the card will be marked so we know who has done an activity at least once.  Participants will not be allowed to do these activities a second time if there are others in line who have not yet done the activity.

REMINDERS
We suggest that, depending on expected weather conditions, attendees come prepared for the expected conditions for that day (sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, rain gear, folding camp chairs, etc).  If you prefer not to take advantage of our free hot dog & beverage lunch, you may want to pack a lunch (free bottles of water are available all day throughout the event).  THROUGH A SPECIAL EXEMPTION FROM THE NJ DIVISION OF FISH & WILDLIFE, THOSE OVER 16 YEARS OF AGE WILL BE PERMITTED TO FISH WITHOUT A LICENSE ON THIS ONE DAY.  For the fishing activities, we suggest that you bring your own rod & reel if you have one.  If you do not own fishing equipment, loaner fishing rods are available at the South Jersey Bass Club Association booth.  You will not NOT be permitted to bring your own firearms, bows or bicycles into the event.  This equipment will be provided at each  activity.  We also request that you NOT bring pets with you to this event.  Your cooperation is appreciated.

TRASH & RECYCLING Recycle
Please act responsibly by placing all trash in the appropriate containers.  If recycle containers are available, please use them for any aluminum, plastic and glass.  Thanks.

FEEDBACK
We appreciate all feedback we receive regarding this event.  Organizational meetings are held in order to ensure that this event is as educational, fun, interesting and safe as it can be.  We use the feedback our attendees provide to try to constantly improve our performance.  Feedback comments are accepted via email at any time.
